Legacy of a Wealthy Slave: A New Haven Story from Ubuntu Storytellers

Legacy of a Wealthy Slave: A New Haven Story from Ubuntu Storytellers In-Person

A historic true story about a man enslaved in Edenton, North Carolina, who after purchasing his freedom comes to New Haven, CT where he registers a patent for his invention, buys property, sends one son to Hopkins Day School and two to Yale University. And as the New York Times headline of his obituary indicated – died wealthy. Part of this compelling story is told in the newly released book by David Blight - Yale and Slavery: A History. This story is further brought to life by a descendant, Denise Manning Keyes Page, story artist, who shares the impact of the unearthing of this history.  It’s followed by Q&A.
